Environment Awareness and Overfishing Campaign

Consult Dive International has a strong commitment to the protection of our Oceans and the Environment as a whole. We strongly believe that scuba divers worldwide should be the best ambassadors for our Oceans.
It is common sense now to acknowledge the fact that our destiny as human being is directly connected to the destiny of the Seas and Oceans of our planet. Isn't it where we come from in the first place?...
We have been diving for over two decades in numerous locations across the globe, and it is a matter of fact that environmental issues are becoming more and more a necessity for quick action! In some regions, we witnessed a near complete depletion of coral reefs and general fish supply in as short a period of time as 5 years!....Developing countries are even more at stake the western countries in the hands of greedy and ruthless politicians.
The most urgent environmental issues to address worldwide are: industrial wastes, random and uncontrolled tourism projects development, over fishing, and fishing methods such as drift nets, dynamite fishing, cyanide fishing, and the reduction of the overall global fishing fleet, which is far too important to sustain ocean species reproduction

WWF Overfishing Campaign statement:

"You may not have noticed, but fish have gradually been getting smaller and smaller. There aren't enough adult fish in the sea to meet demand, so fishermen are catching baby ones. The fish on your plate probably didn't live long enough to reproduce, as a result the stock it came from didn't get a chance to recover. Scientists have been warning the politicians about the disastrous effects of over fishing for years, but the powers that be chose to stick their heads in the sand and think of the short term. Well now it's their last chance.  This year (2002 ed note), ministers will vote on the future of the EU common fisheries policy. Unless they make radical changes, marine eco-systems will be destroyed and fish will become a rare delicacy. If we don't stop over fishing now, fishing will be over..."

The major problem our Oceans are facing is that they are not well respected by the general public, being only a source of pleasure, income and feared as a strong element.. We believe that only Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) like the WWF and others have a certain power to bring States and politicians to step down on important environmental issues such as the over fishing problem among many others.
We as scuba divers could play an important educative role in the process of helping these NGOs as we are aware of the problems touching our environment. Scuba Divers are the best Ambassadors of our Oceans, and we at Consult Dive International are encouraging all responsible divers to join the fight for a better world and lobby to get the general public informed decently on important issues. We can not rely on our politicians to educate the public, as they will never step down on issues feeding their greed for money and power.
We believe we CAN and MUST help them to do so!....Support the WWF in its struggle to bring knowledge and light for a better world, because as in many cases, success comes from a better understanding.

We Dedicate this Page to a Better World!

Please let other divers know about environmental issues such as the overfishing, support the WWF and any other environmental NGO in their fight for a better and safer world!
